IDMS has hit the news in many ways recently. Here is a list of Press releases which you may find useful to read over the holiday period. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Steve Rundle
See this article by Richard Ptak (from Ptak Noel) that notes the difficulty to convert from IDMS and references their paper they did for us. http://www.mainframe-exec.com/articles/?p=85 • Converting mainframe databases such as IMS or IDMS can be expensive and may require a separate project. In some cases, updating IMS or IDMS to a relational database is a multi-million dollar project. However, both IBM and CA have invested significant resources and time to successfully upgrade their respective databases. The least risky and most cost-effective solution may be to keep and upgrade these databases. See www.ptaknoelassociates.com/content/library/2008/CA_IDMS_Biz_Value_for_Innovation.pdf for a discussion of IDMS. There are many references on the IBM Website for IMS modernization.

zJournal http://www.zjournal.com/index.cfm?section=news Nov. 4 issue October 30, 2008 :: CA IDMS r17 Exploits zIIP Engine to Deliver Greater Capacity with Lower TCO CA announced a new version of CA IDMS, a high-performance, high-availability mainframe database management system that helps lower overall mainframe TCO by exploiting IBM’s zIIP (System z Integrated Information Processor) specialty processor to deliver greater computing capacity and throughput without requiring additional system hardware resources. The new version, CA IDMS r17, makes wide use of the zIIP engine, which IBM originally introduced to handle specific types of processing workloads. CA IDMS r17, however, enables customers to direct a much broader set of functions to the zIIP. In fact, portions of all typical CA IDMS production workloads—including those generated by online transaction systems, batch processing jobs and distributed platform requests—can exploit zIIP capacity to offload processing that would otherwise occur in the Central Processor’s CA IDMS address space. Because significant portions of all these CA IDMS r17 workloads can run on zIIPs, customers can better leverage zIIP capacity to scale their database environments without incurring expensive hardware upgrades. This is in marked contrast to DBMS solutions from other vendors that either limit the types of workloads that can be offloaded—or that fail to utilize zIIP altogether.
Mainframe typepad http://mainframe.typepad.com/blog/2008/11/ca-ziips-along.html CA zIIPs Along CA, one of the world's largest software companies, recently announced a new release (r17) of arguably their most important database product: IDMS. This new release exploits the zIIP specialty processors available on System z9 and z10 mainframes, improving price-performance. CA also "saw considerable growth in new mainframe capacity and maintenance" in its just concluded fiscal 2Q2009 corporate earnings. by Timothy Sipples
DBTA 5-minute briefing: http://www.dbta.com/e-newsletters/fmbdc=5_Minute_Briefing_Data_Center/11-10-08.html#1 New Version of CA's IDMS Database Exploits zIIP Engine CA announced a new version of CA IDMS, its mainframe database management system, with new features that the vendor says will help lower overall mainframe TCO by exploiting IBM's zIIP (System z Integrated Information Processor) specialty processor. Employing the zIIP engine will provide greater computing capacity and throughput without requiring additional system hardware resources, CA said. "The mainframe is returning to prominence because of its price/performance capabilities," Greg Beedy, senior principal product manager at CA, told 5 Minute Briefing. "IBM has done a really good job in the last number of years to make the price/performance competitive with distributed platforms. When IT managers and CIOs look at the total cost of ownership in distributed versus mainframe, mainframe offers an attractive alternative these days," he said. "In the case of IDMS, we have found that we can move significant portions of the workload to execute on the zIIP, so it will create increased capacity for growth in the IDMS workload and growth in other mainframe workloads that the customers have," he noted. According to CA, portions of all typical CA IDMS production workloads-including those generated by online transaction systems, batch processing jobs and distributed platform requests-can exploit zIIP capacity to offload processing that would otherwise occur in the Central Processor's CA IDMS address space. Additional CA IDMS features, such as support for CICS threadsafe applications, further increase overall throughput, the vendor said. The new CA IDMS version also is designed to help increase system availability, streamline operations and help boost staff productivity with features including fault-tolerant dynamic system changes, dynamic journals, online index tuning, simplified installation using electronic software delivery, workfile automation for database reorganizations, automatic extensible scratch management, large format files for database and journal files, and improved diagnostics. CA IDMS r17 also is intended to help ease interoperability with distributed systems and Web services through enhanced SQL and TCP/IP support, enabling customers to more easily leverage their mainframe databases and business logic as part of their SOAs. CA also announced the beta release of CA Datacom r12, another CA mainframe database management system, which, like CA IDMS r17, is designed to exploit available zIIP processing capacity. While the zIIP is interesting technology, the reason customers are looking at it is so they can increase their capacity without having to increase costs, noted Beedy. "It really boils down to budget." For more on CA IDMS r17, go here. For more on CA Datacom, go here.
